Main features of device for EEG biofeedback "Mitsar-EEG-BFB"
(Brane Tune)

Mitsar-EEG-BFB

Mitsar-BFB (BrainTune) is a 1 or 2-channel device for performing various protocols of neurofeedback in autonomic, or/and VCR mode, or/and computer modes.  The device records 1 or 2 channels of EEG.  It computes a biofeedback parameter and presents it visually (on the Liquid Crystal indicator) and acoustically (1 Hz beeps).  It can be used and VCR mode by connecting to TV/VCR set by means of a separate device Jammer.

Flexible hardware and software system lends itself to both clinical and home environment, as an independent unit or in connection with any available equipment including a PC, VCR/TV, DVD/TV or CD player. By using various biofeedback protocols provided with system, the user able to improve attention and other cognitive function or learn relaxation simply by watching video films, listening to music or by playing computer game.

The autonomic mode

In this mode the EEG signal is amplified and filtered by microprocessor installed inside the unit.

The output signal is fed back visually on LCD display by changing (in association to the output signal) the length of the bar on the display and/or acoustically by means of simple tone.

The video/audio mode

In this mode the EEG signal is feedback through a video or audio player. The device is easily connected to a VCR/TV set or DVD/TV player through a special electronic adapter (Jammer).

The biofeedback signal adds some noise to video signal or decrease the volume level of acoustic signal if biofeedback signal remains below the threshold. The threshold for the biofeedback signal can be set manually or automatically. The client can choose any video film or music selection he or she prefers.

The computer mode

In this mode the raw EEG signal is fed to the computer processed and recorded by BrainTuner program.

Jammer

“Jammer” is a device for providing neurofeedback in video mode.  The Jammer receives the biofeedback parameter from the BrainTune and adds “noise” to the videosignal feeding to a TV set from a VCR/DVD.  When the biofeedback parameter is less than a threshold the picture on the TV screen becomes “noisy”. When the parameter exceeds the threshold the picture is clear. The client trains his/her brain by simply watching TV.

Main features of software for biofeedback (BrainTuner).

“BrainTuner” is a computer program for neuro-feedback.The BrainTuner provides monitoring 1 or 2 channels of EEG signal, current spectrograms, a dynamics of the biofeedback signal and a learning curve. It also provides a biofeedback screen for a client with the biofeedback parameter depicted as a bar on the monitor.  The program enables the user to design an individual protocol according to QEEG, ERP, ERD assessment performed by the WinEEG program. The software is flexible enabling the user to choose standard protocols or to design a biofeedback protocol according to the client’s needs. The power spectra for a chosen EEG channel are computed continuously using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). The biofeedback signal is then computed by FFT or high order digital filters either as an EEG power in a chosen band (for example, Alpha) or as a ratio of powers in two or more bands (for example, theta/beta ratio) and can be fed back in three different modes:

1)by changing the height of a bar on the computer screen – the visual mode

2)by changing the loudness of the audio signal played back from a compact disc – the audio mode

3)by adding noise to the video signal played back on a TV from a VCR/DVD – the video mode.

Biofeedback modes - The biofeedback signal is fed back by changing the height of a bar on the computer screen – the visual mode

The biofeedback signal is fed back by changing the loudness of the audio signal played back from a compact disc inserted in the computer – the audio mode.

-The biofeedback signal is fed back by changing both the height of a bar on the computer screen and the loudness of the audio signal - the visual-audio mode

-Thebiofeedback signal is fed back by adding noise to the video signal played back on a TV from a VCR or DVD if biofeedback signal remains below the threshold – the video mode. The TV/VCR set is connected to computer through special electronic adapter (Jammer)

Biofeedback protocols -Single channel protocol. EEG is recorded from one channel in monopolar or bipolar montage. The biofeedback signal is usually computed as power of signal in defined frequency band or as the ration of EEG power in two different frequency bands. More complex computation of biofeedback signal can be designed according the formula:

-Double channel protocol. EEG is recorded from two channels in monopolar or bipolar montage. A ration of the sums of EEG powers in different frequency ranges are calculated for each channel separately. And biofeedback signal is computed according the formula:

This protocol can be helpful if it is necessary to train asymmetry of EEG power.

-The threshold for biofeedback signal can be set manually or automatically

-The power of signal can be computed using FFT or by high order FIR filters.

-Switching of relaxation and training periods can be performed manually or automatically. The durations of training and relaxation periods are user.

On-Line displaying -Raw EEG

-Dynamics of the biofeedback signal (training curve).

-Current spectrograms

-Training report – a table including a percentage values of time periods during which the biofeedback signal war higher than threshold.

-All mentioned above parameters can be stored to hard disk and analyzed later.

Additional features -Build-in database or Mitsar database MDB.

-Recording 19-channels EEG during biofeedback training session and automatically storing to WinEEG database for the future analysis.
